How far is the Blue Dolphin from the beach?
The Blue Dolphin is about 2 blocks north of the beach, or about 1/3 of a mile walk through the neighborhood. If you picture your high school track, it’s about a lap and a half walk around the track from our front door to the beach. In the summertime, there is a shuttle that picks you up right at your front door and takes you to the beach (see below). This walk between our home and the beach is nice and flat – it’s great for jogging or walking. Our home is also only two blocks south of Destin Commons, the area’s largest outdoor shopping area.

How does the beach shuttle work?
The shuttle is available in the summer months to take people back and forth to and from the beach about every 15 minutes. (But, I’ve found that if you call the phone number for the shuttle, the shuttle will come to your front door to pick you up.)

Although it is a short walk to the beach, sometimes you’ll want to bring down coolers, umbrellas, etc. that you don’t want to carry. And, during the summer months, parking can be hard to find by the beach. So the main purpose of the shuttle is to be available to help you get your things down to the beach without having to find a parking space. A picture of the shuttle is to the right.

What facilities are at the pool and what are the hours?
The community pool is surrounded by plenty of lounge chairs, and tables with chairs. In addition, the pool has a hot tub next to it, and a shaded bar area with tables and bar stools, with two or three flat-panel televisions mounted behind the bar. Also, there are restrooms and showers by the pool. The pool is open from 8 am in the morning until 10 pm at night.

Is the pool heated?
In the early spring, the pool is heated in order to bring it up to temperature for the spring break time period. Once it’s brought up to temperature in March, the water retains the heat as the warmer months of April and May come around. Once you’re into May, the sun takes over the job of keeping the water warm.

How far is the Blue Dolphin from the pool?
Distance from the Blue Dolphin home to the Pool. It’s a very short walk from the front door of our home to the pool. The distance is about 450 feet, less than 1/12 of a mile, or about the length of a football field (endzone to endzone). It takes about 2 or 3 minutes to walk there. Some people have asked if our unit faces the pool, and the answer is that it does not (as you can see from the picture it is one block over from the pool). I like the location of our home, because the pool area and the surrounding streets tend to be more crowded and more noisy at night. There is just a lot more going on over by the pool. Our block is nice and peaceful after dark, so you can sit out front on the patio or on one of the balconies and relax and sip your drinks with no disturbance. What’s the weather like in Destin during the spring and fall of the year?
The weather on the Emerald Coast in the spring and fall is really wonderful. Daytime highs are in the 80s, so you can enjoy the water. And, at nights it is cool with a slight breeze, perfect for enjoying a night out. See the graph for the average temperatures during the months of the year.

Where are the closest airports to the Blue Dolphin?
The closest commercial airport to the Blue Dolphin is Valparaiso, north of Fort Walton, adjacent to Eglin Air Force Base. It’s airport designation code is VPS and it’s only about a 25-minute drive northwest from the Blue Dolphin. Most flights that come into VPS are usually from Atlanta (ATL) or Dallas/Ft. Worth (DFW). You can also fly into the new Panama City airport (ECP – which stands for Emerald Coast Panama city). ECP is only about a 45-minute drive east of the Blue Dolphin. Southwest airlines currently has direct flights from Nashville (continuation from Chicago Midway), Baltimore, Houston Hobby, and Orlando. Another airport that is in the area is Pensacola (PNS), which is about 50 minutes drive to the west. Again, I think most flights into PNS come from ATL and DFW.

How far away are the nearest shopping centers, restaurants? Will I be driving a lot?
Within a half mile radius of the Blue Dolphin, there are several shopping centers and strip malls, including Destin Commons, the largest outdoor shopping mall in the area. Stores like Best Buy, ULTA, Bass Pro, Abercrombie and Fitch, Banana Republic, etc. and restaurants like Hard Rock Café, Panera Bread, Starbucks, etc. are only a short walk away from our front door. Click here for a list of stores and restaurants at Destin Commons.

Where is the beach access and rest rooms near the beach?
The beach is just a few blocks away from Blue Dolphin, an easy walk approximately the distance of a lap and a half around your high school track. Their are many public beach access points once you reach the Scenic 98 road. Also, there are a few locations that have a public restroom. During the summer months, the beach shuttle will bring you from the Blue Dolphin to the Pompano Street beach access, as detailed above. Click on the map below to get a larger view of the beach access points and restroom locations.

Highway 98 is really crowded. Is there another way to get around?
Ah, my friend. I’m going to let you in on a secret that only the Destin locals know about. Yes, there is a “back road” to get you nearly everywhere you want to go west of the Blue Dolphin (towards Destin harbor) with a lot less traffic. It is a combination of roads – from Commons Drive, to Airport Road, to Legion Drive, to Azalea Drive – and you can go from the Blue Dolphin home to the Destin Harbor area without even driving on Highway 98. (Click on the map below to see the route.) The locals know about this route, but it isn’t very well documented for tourists. So, now, when you see that Highway 98 is backed up (mostly during the summer months), you now have an alternative route to get around Destin. You may actually get somewhere in a lot less time.

How do I get the showers to work at the Blue Dolphin?
The bathroom valves at the Blue Dolphin are Delta brand faucets. In order to activate the shower, you need to pull down on the outer ring of the bathroom spout.

How do I work the barbecue grill at the Blue Dolphin?
The barbecue grill at the Blue Dolphin is a CharGrill gas grill. You should first open the door on the bottom of the grill and rotate the valve on the top of the LPG (propane) cylinder clockwise until it stops. This turns on the gas to the grill. Try using the ignition button to light the burners. If it doesn’t work, the AA battery may need to be replaced. You can also light the grill with a lighter or match. LIGHT THE LEFTMOST BURNER FIRST, because there is a small opening in the side of the grill underneath the side burner where you can stick the lighter end or match into when turning on the gas knob. See the instructions for lighting the barbecue grill here, and follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions. When you are finished, make sure that you close the valve on the top of the LPG (propane) cylinder by rotating the knob counterclockwise until it stops.
